During this time he set up Conflict and Change, the first community based mediation project in the UK (1984). He also founded and chairs Landmark Training, providing vocational training to young people with special needs (1980). He is a board member of London Citizens, a Broad Based Community Organisation. He is a trustee of London Catalyst, a grant giving foundation in London. Value of the SectorThe value of the sector is significant for the overall economy. The voluntary sector accounts for one in twenty five full time paid jobs in the UK and one in ten service jobs. More than half the population, an astonishing 26 million people, participate in some form of voluntary work with more than 11 million working on formal schemes. It has been estimated that volunteers are worth £40 billion a year to the UK economy. The sector covers a wide spectrum from multi-million pound national charities to small uniformed organisations meeting in a church hall. The importance of the sector cannot be measured in economic terms alone. All the research into Social Capital indicates the importance to peoples’ health and well being of having a group to belong to. Social cohesion depends on the networks formal and informal which grow around community centres, religious institutions, clubs and societies.
